Archaeologists in France have discovered an ancient burial pit containing 6,000 year-old skeletal remains. From the looks of it they are just the bits and pieces of ancient people: hands, fingers, arms and such. All I can think is, “How horrid! What on Earth happened to these poor people?”
The ancestors of the little French village of Bergheim, which is very near France’s border with Germany, evidently fell victim to a violent tragedy. Just what kind of wars were fought 6,000 years ago? They most definitely involved clubs and swords which would account for pits filled with hacked off body parts.
The interment of these pitiful remains was only five feet below the earth’s surface. Some were even the limbs of young children, perhaps 12 years-old to 16 years-old. Nowadays it is unheard of for children that young to be actively fighting in battle. Back then, however, it was probably a very different story. Many armies that marched off to war had youngsters in their ranks who tended to menial tasks like running messages about, mending garments, tending livestock, and keeping battle gear in good working order. I do not doubt that many of these youths found it necessary to take up arms themselves from time to time. Especially if they ended up on the losing side.
The evidence on the French remains indicate that these poor, young, souls were most likely dismembered with a knife or axe. How grotesque. Amongst all of these bits of severed bone were the complete skeletal remains of two adults, three children and one infant. One of the adults was a middle-aged man.
In modern times a 50-60 year-old man, though middle-aged, is still considered a young man with many healthy, hearty years ahead of him. However, 6,000 years ago, it was probably the golden years in that era. This man had his hand cut off and had taken what was probably a fatal blow to the head. [Read more…]
